Safe Numbering Changes and Common Issues

Numbering change control and troubleshooting unexpected numbers.

Last updated 20 days ago

Before making a change, note down the current prefix, the next number, the organization, the format, and the last document number used. Perform the numbering change when other users are not simultaneously creating large volumes of documents of the same type.

If the suggested number is incorrect, check the document organization, the selected series, the default series flag, the number format, and the last document in that series. If you do not see the series, check its organization, the document type, and your user settings.

Do not lower the "next number" value simply to eliminate a gap. A gap does not cause a duplicate, whereas reverting to a previously used number can cause a conflict. Removing a series does not affect existing documents. After every change, verify a new document and its final PDF output.
